Congresswoman Elise Stefanik Caught Lying to Public, Disingenuously Ties Bail Reform to Immigration Law Backlash

Stefanik Latest Official to Mislead the Public, Play Politics by Engaging in Misinformation and Public Safety

NEW YORK—In response to the latest in a series of politicized, misleading information spread by New York Republicans against bail reform, New Yorkers United for Justice’s Senior Advisor Topeka K. Sam made the following statement, calling Congresswoman Stefanik out for a bad faith take on criminal justice reform, which puts her far outside the national GOP’s record of leadership on the issue:

“While we are inundated with misinformation and using every resource to set the record straight, Congresswoman Stefanik is abusing public trust by using her political power to mislead the public and stoke their fear around criminal justice reform.

“By incorrectly tying bail reform to one family’s tragedy, not only is she using a woman’s death for political gain, but she is purposefully misleading her constituents – the facts are, bail reform has nothing to do with sanctuary cities or Green Light NY. This is demagoguery at its finest.

“New Yorkers deserve honest, fact-based discussions on these reforms that are improving public safety and creating a more equitable justice system—not blatant lies pushing an agenda of fear. We call on the Congresswoman to immediately retract her statements and join a productive conversation on fairness, safety and reforms.”
