NYUJ Statement on Derek Chauvin Trial Verdict

Alexander Horwitz, Executive Director of New Yorkers United for Justice (NYUJ) issued the following statement:

“We were relieved to hear news of the Derek Chauvin trial verdict and hope that the result will bring some sense of closure to the loved ones of George Floyd.

We also echo the response of many others and recognize that the work for true progress remains. The conviction of Derek Chauvin will not bring back George Floyd nor the countless other victims that were failed by a broken system that was meant to protect them. We recognize that holding one killer accountable does not absolve the systemic racism and litany of injustices that continue to be perpetuated by our bigoted justice system. This verdict does not signal an end to the national awakening George Floyd’s murder set off last summer and the collective calls for real change.

George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Eric Garner. Phillando Castille. Daunte Wright. And countless others.

We urge all elected officials and policymakers in New York State and beyond to use this moment to honor the memory of these victims and hold themselves accountable in the effort to build a justice system that is based on accountability, racial equity, and true justice for all.”
